Amos - part 14
AMOS -Amos gets to root of the problem
Chapter 7 Part 2
Amos 7:1-17
Prophesy Synopsis:
“Omitting the essential constant in your equation of life
will cause big problems!”
What do you see as most significant or essential in these mathematical equations?
A=PI r2 , V=4/3PI r3 , C=PI d
And most of us know that if you solve for PI you get: C/D=PI
Except . . . That the value represented by C/D can only be approximated because the answer is infinite in the number of decimal places.
In mathematics PI is now known as a transcendent constant!
Interesting, because if Pi is infinite in its calculation, then,
it is just like God! (see also the Lindemann-Weierstrass Theorem)
Vision of Tin
7 He showed me this: I saw the Lord standing by a tin wall holding tin in his hand.
8 The Lord said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” I said, “Tin.” The Lord then said, “Look, I am about to place tin among my people Israel. I will no longer overlook their sin.
9 Isaac’s centers of worship will become desolate; Israel’s holy places will be in ruins. I will attack Jeroboam’s dynasty with the sword.”
What do you notice that is strange to observe here?
Confused? Plumb Line or Tin? (look up “Akkadian cognate annaku”)
Amos 7:7-9 (NASB)
Vision of the plumbline
7 Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand.
8 The LORD said to me, "What do you see, Amos?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "Behold I am about to put a plumb line in the midst of My people Israel. I will spare them no longer.
9 "The high places of Isaac will be desolated And the sanctuaries of Israel laid waste. Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword."
What do you think is important to observe here?
How do/should we respond when someone, mature in Christ, reveals the plumbline of righteousness in the midst of our life?
Conclusions/Reflections/Applications
The Essential Constant
Israel had replaced the eternal transcendent Lord God, Ădônây Yehôvı̂h, with their own finite and transcend-less hand made god fashioned into a golden calf!
Just as p is the essential constant in calculating any of the formulas for circles or spheres, God (AW), must be the essential constant included in every formula we devise for our lives!
In what ways have I let an ‘Idol’
take precedence, influence, or residence in my life?
Is there an ‘Amos’ in my life that I need to recognize?
Are you an ‘Amos’ in someone else’s life?
Application Exercise
Describe what it looks like to: (Deuteronomy 10:12)
•to fear the LORD
•to walk in all His ways
•love Him
•serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul
