Week 10: 1 Cor 7:25-40
This chapter discusses "gray issues" -- neither moralistic nor sin issues. For the Corinthians it was meat offered to idols. For us today it is smoking or drinking or going to R-rated movies, etc. There was a faction there who "knew" it was totally fine and wanted Paul to respond with a simple "yes" to their query. Instead, Paul explained that those with a "superior knowledge" about such issues run the risk of wounding the conscience of believers who did not understand the issue to the same degree. His caution was profound and certainly quite unexpected. Their liberty to express their opinion needed to be tempered with a strong and loving relationship with God. Only in that way could our interaction with other believers not "cause a brother to stumble".
